Leadership
means different things to different people. It would take a
lifetime to read all that has been written about the topic.
Having studied this field for many years, and learned from the
many successes of hundreds of leaders, I have come to one conclusion:
True leadership begins with an individual's commitment to grow.
If a leader can be open enough to step back, look at what is
working and what is not, and determine a clear vision of where
they want to go, and how they want to get there - some pretty
amazing things are possible. If you get this straight, align
your passions and strengths, and learn the necessary skills,
you can begin to reach out to the world around you in a powerful
way. You can begin to bring out the very best in people, and
empower them to extraordinary achievement. It's a journey. And
there are no short cuts or quick fixes on the road to building
personal, team or corporate excellence. Real leadership is not
about tweaking personality or learning a few techniques. It
is about the challenging task of building a solid base of personal
character, and competency on a wide range of technical and soft
skills, to help you develop, communicate and sustain a compelling
and empowering vision for you, and the people in your organization.
It includes a commitment to:
- Integrity
and fairness.
-
Creating a deeply shared sense of personal and
group purpose.
-
An attitude of service, quality and adding genuine
value.
- Clarity
on objectives and an ability to see the big picture.
-
Clarity on personal and professional values and
principles.
- Facing
the hard truths and doing what needs to be done.
- Being
proactive.
- A
balanced, compassionate and abundant outlook.
- Excellent
communication and organization skills.
- Developing
an ability to coach or empower others to high
levels of achievement.
- Ongoing
personal and professional development.
|
With
these qualities a leader, or team, can begin to build outward,
genuinely influencing, inspiring, motivating and leading others
to create and accomplish far more than what is now thought
possible.
"Mastery
of the art of leadership comes with the mastery of self.
Ultimately, leadership development is a process of self-development.
